NAICA WERE TWO

Naica were two, when they started their path wetted by the Hudson and East River. But as they moved to the quiet shores of the Bidasoa, they became a couple, two brothers, a doctor and a tall guy with a beard; and even if they add up to six, they’re five. Their music has changed considerably since the origins: in a classic format for electro-acoustic music (drums, bass, guitars and piano), they have reinterpreted these old songs that were first conceived to be played as an acoustic duet and now sound to be new.

Naica walks through different landscapes and sounds, moving through quiet places and approaching others that not so quiet. Naica tries to find its own way; tries to express its own voice in a comfortable way, as it comes from the inside. Naica prefers not to identify itself with styles or doesn’t even seek authors who become patrons. It surely looks like something, but not for me to say that; and to be honest, I’m not even interested. Naica ⎯ I know it because I've been told so ⎯ finds it difficult to describe in words what it’s actually just moving air, so I understand that the best way to answer these questions is to approach any of their concerts and listen carefully to what they’re trying to tell.

NAICA FUERON DOS

Naica fueron dos, sus inicios mojados por el Hudson y el East River se trasladaron a las apacibles orillas del Bidasoa donde se convirtieron en un matrimonio, dos hermanos, un médico y un chico alto con barba, y aunque sumen seis en verdad son cinco. Su música ha variado bastante desde los orígenes a esta parte. En un formato clásico para la música electro-acústica (batería, bajo, guitarra y piano) reinterpretan y presentan esas canciones, que siendo viejas ahora parecen nuevas; composiciones que en principio fueron concebidas de una manera más acústica pensada para dos.

Naica pasea por distintos paisajes y sonoridades, transitando entre lugares apacibles y acercándose a otros que no lo son tanto. Naica intenta buscar su manera, intenta expresar su propia voz de forma cómoda que le sale de dentro y prefiere no identificarse con estilos ni buscar autores que la apadrinen. Seguro que se parece a algo, pero eso no me toca decirlo a mi y a decir verdad tampoco me interesa demasiado. A Naica, lo sé porque me lo han contado, le cuesta describir con palabras lo que en realidad es aire en movimiento, así que entienden que la mejor manera de despejar estas dudas es acercarse a cualquier concierto suyo y escuchar con atención lo que quieren contarnos.

NAICA BI IZAN ZIREN

Naica bi izan ziren Hudson eta East River ibaien inguruan ibilbidea hasi zutenean. Handik gutxira, Bidasoa ibaiaren ertz atseginetara itzultzerakoan, senar-emazte, bi anaia, mediku bat eta mutil altu bizardun bat izatera pasa dira: denera sei batu arren, bost dira benetan. Hastapenetik gaur arte nabarmen aldatu da beraien musika. Hasieran, bikote akustikorako sortu ziren kantu zahar horiek, ber-interpretatu, eta berri gisa ageri dira orain, formatu elektroakustiko klasikoan —bateria, baxua, kitarra eta pianoa—.

Naica paisai eta sonoritate ezberdinetan zehar pasieran dabil, toki atseginetan zehar igaroz, eta ez hain atseginetara ere hurbilduz. Naicak bere modua bilatu nahi du, bere ahots propioa erakutsi, barrutik irtetzen zaion moduan, era erosoan. Estilo finkoetatik eta autore famatuen babesetik ihesi, ziurrenik, zerbaiten antza izango du, baina niri ez dagokit hori esatea, eta, egia esan, ez zait axola ere.
